The main thrust of the course is to enable participants appreciate the broader view of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) interventions, and the benefits of incorporating a livelihood component in WASH projects for sustainability.

The module provides programing skills on WASH and livelihood through the concept of multiple uses of water. The design of the module is not only to focus on increased access to water and sanitation services, but also productive uses of water to supplement the disposal incomes at the household level. Part of the income generated from the livelihood activities can then be used for payment of user fees to sustain the WASH project.

The course also recognizes that WASH and livelihood takes cognizance of the complimentary role of the two in developing sustainable programs. Site exposure visits for practical learning is covered to give first hand practical experiences.

Course Objectives

  1. Be able to appreciate the complimentary role of WASH and livelihood.
  2. Be able to develop WASH interventions with a livelihood component that takes advantage of the water supply and human waste re-cycling for income generation.
  3. Be able to demonstrate that the benefits of WASH and livelihood programming far outweighs the extra resources deployed, and increases the ability of the households in paying the user fees for water, and therefore contributes to sustainability.
